Week 8 - Editorial on Untruthful News

How to spot Fake News Infographic

Fake News and You

Technology has advanced so much in the past few decades. Before, people were dependent on newspapers and news reports on the television to get the inside scoop on what was going on with the world. Nowadays, people have the ability to just look up information with just a few keystrokes on their phone. Anytime, anyplace. Unfortunately, with the growing convenience of the entire world's knowledge in the palm of your hand, the is also a growing increase on the amount of fake news.

Fake news is exactly that. False news that is being presented as fact to the public. Fake news has become a growing issue over these past few years and it has only gotten worse since the COVID-19 pandemic has become widespread.

There is not only the issue of fake news, but also a problem with biases. People who have strong biases tend to believe news that fits their agenda rather than listen to the truth even if it goes against their beliefs. According to Darrel M. West in his Brookings article, "How to combat Fake News and Disinformation," many news outlets have grown increasingly polarized which resulted in a steady decline trust in traditional journalism.

One way that people can combat the threat of fake news, is to encourage the news/journalism industry to focus on high-quality journalism and refrain from becoming polarized. When you polarize the news you also run the risk of polarizing your audience.

According to a Gallup poll, (mentioned on the Brookings website) the public trust in journalism had decreased a staggering twenty-three percent from it's highest point in 1999 which was fifty-five percent to it's lowest in 2016 at thirty-two percent.

Going back to Darrel West's article, the biggest turn off for many people was their news becoming increasingly polarized at best and biased at worst. So I propose the biggest way to eliminate fake news is to make sure that people do not have to gravitate to fake news to begin with.

In Darrel West's article, he talks about several methods that the government, the news industry, technology/social media companies can work together to eliminate fake news. One method he mentioned, was encouraging high-quality journalism in order to gain public trust again.

I would like to take it one step further and also add that the viewers should also not only to listen to one main news source, but instead listen to different news outlets in order to gain a wider picture of the current events that are going on. Darren West mentions this as well in his article, and that listening to a wider range of voices on the news allows for an open-minded view of the world, rather than just listening to one main news source and other like-minded resources.

The purpose of the assignment is to bring awareness to a growing problem on social media and to help better prepare you for the next time you go looking for information online.

The key question at the heart of the assignment is what are some ways that you can make sure that you don't fall for a fake news story/article?

Week 5 - Collaborative Connections

What is the purpose of a collaborative connection? The purpose of a collaborative connection is to meet people with similar goals and/or interests in order to create bonds to help each other achieve their goals. Collaborative connections, as I interpret it, a community of like-minded people reaching out to others just like themselves on social media and creating bonds and sub-communities. People connecting online and supporting each other in a positive way and thus working together to achieve a common goal. For example, a group of cancer survivors or friends and families of cancer patients can form a sub-community online to connect with each other. Consoling and comforting those in times of great hard-ships, and maybe organizing events to help raise awareness or money for families in dire need. If you decided to make a collaborate connection online what would happen? Ideally, what I would want to happen would be to maybe create a connection online, I would want people to of cours...

Week 10 - Essential Questions About Sharing

What do you take for granted or assume about sharing? What I assume/take for granted about sharing is the idea that people who post stuff online, usually do it to be heard and seen. Whether it be for their close friends and families, or on a more public platform. In some extreme cases, some people will post stuff online in hopes to become internet famous, or the next big influencer. In other words, people use social media to share their thoughts and opinions on various topics. People also use social media as a way to “show off” a window into their lives. The food they’re eating, where they visited, who they hang out with, all get shared on social media. Most do it for fun or recreationally, while others do it as their main source of income, or try to. For example, a woman by the name of  Lissette Calveiro ,  put herself into $10,000 in debt trying to become an Instagram influencer. She bought expensive clothes, and traveling to different locations all for Instagram. T...

Week 4 - Intellectual Standards

INTELLECTUAL STANDARDS Clarity I understand "clarity" to mean to be clear and understandable. In other words, being easy to follow and understand so that the viewers can follow along. You can also achieve clarity by asking questions when something is unclear or can be easily misunderstood. An example of someone exhibiting clarity with social media would be my friend advertising for a fundraiser on Facebook. My friend would then give the details of what the fundraiser is for, when/where it is going to be, and other information. This way everyone will be on the same page and will know what to expect should they wish to participate. Let's also say that I don't know how to get to the location, I would then ask, "How do you get to the fundraiser?" or something like that and my friend will then post detailed directions so that everyone will know how to get there. Accuracy I understand "accuracy" to mean as factually correct as possible. In other wor...
