Week 4 - Intellectual Standards

INTELLECTUAL STANDARDS

Clarity

  1. I understand "clarity" to mean to be clear and understandable.
  2. In other words, being easy to follow and understand so that the viewers can follow along. You can also achieve clarity by asking questions when something is unclear or can be easily misunderstood.
  3. An example of someone exhibiting clarity with social media would be my friend advertising for a fundraiser on Facebook. My friend would then give the details of what the fundraiser is for, when/where it is going to be, and other information. This way everyone will be on the same page and will know what to expect should they wish to participate. Let's also say that I don't know how to get to the location, I would then ask, "How do you get to the fundraiser?" or something like that and my friend will then post detailed directions so that everyone will know how to get there.

Accuracy

  1. I understand "accuracy" to mean as factually correct as possible.
  2. In other words, sticking to the facts whenever and wherever possible. Telling the whole truth in order to avoid misinforming your audience.
  3. An example of someone exhibiting accuracy with social media would be someone sharing a "life hack" on Instagram. Involving putting your phone in the microwave for two minutes on high in order to "charge your phone." Obviously this is incredibly dangerous and will only cause a fire hazard. In response, I would post something like, "DO NOT DO THIS!!" and then continue to explain that if you do this, you will not only damage your phone, but also potentially start a fire. While most people will probably not fall for this fake life hack, is is always better to be safe than sorry, especially on the internet.

Precision

  1. I understand "precision" to mean as detailed in description as possible.
  2. In other words, explaining the story in as much detail as possible so, the audience can get the full story with context. This is important because, people with a general understanding of the story may not fully understand what is going on or come to the wrong conclusions of the situation.
  3. An example of someone exhibiting precision with social media would be when my friend was asking people on Facebook messenger about a homework assignment that was assigned when she was out sick. I then wrote back to her what the assignment was and how to properly do the assignment. This is because I don't want her grade to be affected because I gave her the wrong information about the assignment, so I take care and make sure that I give her as much detail about the assignment as I can so that she can complete it properly.

Relevance

  1. I understand "relevance" to mean pertaining to the current situation.
  2. In other words, giving details, as long as they give a deeper context in the situation. Not adding any unnecessary details that does not add anything to the story. It is also important to note that you should also avoid going off topic when asking questions and not ask questions that does not tie into the current subject.
  3. An example of someone exhibiting relevance with social media would be Facebook posting on my feed that it is my birthday today. My aunty would then see the notification and the ask questions like how old I was going to be and if she could stop by and bring me a gift. These questions all relate to the initial topic of my birthday.

The purpose of the assignment is to better understand a few of the intellectual standards and how to properly use them in your daily life.

The key question at the heart of the assignment is have you noticed any of these standards being used when you go on social media?

Comments

  1. Your statement had precision when you said "An example of someone exhibiting relevance with social media would be Facebook posting on my feed that it is my birthday today. My aunty would then see the notification and the ask questions like how old I was going to be and if she could stop by and bring me a gift. These questions all relate to the initial topic of my birthday. " You provided a person example that was specific to the topic at hand which was relevance.

Week 5 - Collaborative Connections

What is the purpose of a collaborative connection? The purpose of a collaborative connection is to meet people with similar goals and/or interests in order to create bonds to help each other achieve their goals. Collaborative connections, as I interpret it, a community of like-minded people reaching out to others just like themselves on social media and creating bonds and sub-communities. People connecting online and supporting each other in a positive way and thus working together to achieve a common goal. For example, a group of cancer survivors or friends and families of cancer patients can form a sub-community online to connect with each other. Consoling and comforting those in times of great hard-ships, and maybe organizing events to help raise awareness or money for families in dire need. If you decided to make a collaborate connection online what would happen? Ideally, what I would want to happen would be to maybe create a connection online, I would want people to of cours...

Week 10 - Essential Questions About Sharing

What do you take for granted or assume about sharing? What I assume/take for granted about sharing is the idea that people who post stuff online, usually do it to be heard and seen. Whether it be for their close friends and families, or on a more public platform. In some extreme cases, some people will post stuff online in hopes to become internet famous, or the next big influencer. In other words, people use social media to share their thoughts and opinions on various topics. People also use social media as a way to “show off” a window into their lives. The food they’re eating, where they visited, who they hang out with, all get shared on social media. Most do it for fun or recreationally, while others do it as their main source of income, or try to. For example, a woman by the name of  Lissette Calveiro ,  put herself into $10,000 in debt trying to become an Instagram influencer. She bought expensive clothes, and traveling to different locations all for Instagram. T...

Week 5 - Intellectual Standards Part 2

Depth 1. I understand "depth" to mean providing a deeper meaning of a subject.   2. In other words, a statement that goes beyond just a simple explanation. Instead, providing it's purpose and underlying concepts hidden between the lines.   3. An example of someone exhibiting depth with social media would be my friend on YouTube talking about a specific book, movie, or video game that she really loves. She will give a brief description of the topic in question, then she will give her own opinions and/or give her own interpretations of the work to her viewers.   Breadth 1. I understand "breadth" to mean allowing for interpretations from different points of view. 2. In other words, creating an open discussion on certain topics and subjects. Thus allowing people to voice their own opinions from all perspectives instead of focusing on one insight over all others.  3. An example of someone exhibiting breadth with social media would be my frien...
