"Avoid All Problems and Use Public Domain Images"
Basically, to avoid getting in trouble with copyright infringement and plagiarizing someone else's work. Which, would then lead to legal ramifications. You can avoid running into trouble, in the future, by using images that are available to the public domain. This means that anyone can use these images without having to pay royalties or even having to credit the main source. Just because these pictures are free to use, doesn't necessarily mean that they are low quality pictures. There are lots of pictures with decent quality free to use. It may take longer to search for the perfect images but it will definitely be beneficial to you in the long run.
"Just Because Other People Do it Doesn't Make it Right"
Just because some people manage to get away with copyright infringement, doesn't mean that you will be able to get away with it. This is also due to the fact that, since the internet is so vast and open it is hard to track down every single person who breaks the copyright law. It may seem unfair that people seem to crawl under the radar while others get caught after their first offense. It is better to take the high road when using images that you find on the internet. Meaning that, you should always proceed with caution when using images that you find online. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to getting caught for copyright.

Basically, there are lots of free to use pictures online. These pictures are mostly of decent quality and are safe to use. In other words, there are lots of websites dedicated to free to use pictures online and can be just as useful. Best of all, free to use pictures will save you down the line from running into trouble with copyright law. For example, if my friend went on vacation and took beautiful pictures (with her own camera) of her trip, and posted them on her Facebook page. Unfortunately, another person starts posting pictures on their Facebook that look oddly similar to the pictures that my friend took. My friend would then flag the person through Facebook's community guidelines and report on the person for stealing her pictures.
"Just Because Other People Do it Doesn't Make it Right"
The key question at the heart of the assignment is if you see a friend copying an image, that isn't a free domain picture, what would you do?
Your statement had Significance when you said "For example, YouTubers making videos that include copyrighted music or video clips. There are hundreds of content creators that do this and sometimes get away with it. However, If I were to make a YouTube video, and used licensed music, even if I made it a priority to include credit to the artist and license owner into my video, I would probably not post it. " You show significance by relating providing an example but still relating it to the topic at hand.
ReplyDeleteYour statement " I should always think that I could be one of the unlucky ones that will get caught." has relevance as it allows us to step into the shoes of someone in that predicament. I was able to understand your example much better as well as the overall concept of copyright!

ReplyDeleteAs a Parent I can honestly and truly understand & appreciate your opening statement about putting things away. And then when you take it forward..."proceed with caution", I think you hit the nail on the head regarding Copyright Infringement. Too many people just think it's OK or Acceptable to grab the work, the efforts of someone else and push them forward as their own...Their own product. Originality & Creativity Counts, it means something and it has value.
Then when you said "Just Because Other People Do it Doesn't Make it Right."
This also resonates with me, as a parent and a supervisor. I have always, and still do, preached to my personnel & my kids, those same magical words..."Just Because Other People Do it Doesn't Make it Right." This holds true now, in the past and will far in to the future...I hope.

Your statement "While other people are guilty of copyright doesn't mean that you will be so lucky if you were to do the same." had relevance because it makes you evaluate what is right and wrong.

ReplyDeleteYour statement had significance when you said " The purpose of the assignment is to help teach you how important it is to use images from the public domain and how by copyrighting images can lead to serious consequences down the road." It was focusing on the important information and was easy to understand.
